Gone Campin'/Hikin' ~ Sept. 23-25, 2011

We hadn't been to "the great outdoors" since our trip to Durango at the end of June, so we planned an "easy" camping trip to Payson at the end of Sept. (I say "easy" because we were in a campground with flushing toilets not too far from town. In fact, I had full cell phone coverage and internet connection in the middle of the campsite. Not something I've ever been able to say before! We also got to stop for ice cream after our hike on Sat. Sometimes "civilized camping" is the best way to go!)

This was primarily a trial run for taking our lab, Bundy, camping with us. Unfortunately, we're starting to outgrow our Ford Explorer so we could not take both the dog and the canoe, but we did get a nice hike in near Pine. We're happy to say that Bundy did wonderfully well! He even enjoyed his little sleeping spot under the table in the pop-up.

So happy together! (We always hate to leave Bundy when we go camping, even though we know he's in good hands - often with Grammie and Poppie.)

Paul and Gracie had fun taking these shots the first morning we were there. It was chilly when we woke but warmed up pretty quickly.

Silly Gracie Bumble!

Bundy in his "spot." The kids loved taking him for a walk in the campsite, and boy, did he appreciate the bacon cooked over the campfire!

Checking out something in the bushes.

Jack always collects a stick or two on each trip. This time he found a y-shaped one - perfect for a pinecone slingshot!

One of several little horned toads we saw on our hike.

Another one. Neat how they blend in so well!

The beautiful canyon where we hiked.

Paul and I loved these bushes with the copper colored trunks (can't remember now what the name is!)

Near the canyon lookout.

The Boy Scouts had put up these trail markers and signs for one of their scout projects and had left some perfectly good firewood near their campsite. We each carried a nice piece out - couldn't pass up that opportunity. Unfortunately, we saw a snake about a mile or so in on the trail. That did it for Gracie (who is deathly afraid of them.) She would go no further.

Getting Jack smoochin's near the campfire.

Silly shot.

Love making all these wonderful memories!
